Newbi vs a website: when a one-link portal is enough, and when it isn't

Many small businesses do not need a website. Some do. How to tell which you are before you pay for either, and when the answer is both.

"Do I need a website?" is a question almost every small business owner asks, and the honest answer is "it depends what the website would do". A website is a tool for a few specific jobs. If none of those jobs applies to you, you are paying for a building you do not use.

Newbi is a one-link portal: a digital card holding a mini-store, a booking button and a lead capture form. I built it, so keep that in mind. This article is about when that is enough, and when it is not.

What most small businesses actually need online

A customer who looks you up wants to know five things: who you are, what you do, what it costs, whether you can do it when they need it, and how to reach you. If they can get those answers and act on them, you have done the job.

A Newbi card answers all five on one page:

  • Who you are: your photo, your bio and your socials, in a theme that suits your trade. Naya, the AI built into Newbi, drafts the bio from your description or from a photo of your old paper card.
  • What you do and what it costs: the mini-store shows your products with prices, and a price list shows your packages, so nobody has to ask "do you have…?" and you send the price list once, by link.
  • When: a booking button, so the client picks a free time.
  • How to reach you: a WhatsApp button, a save-contact button, and a lead form for anyone who is not ready to talk.

There is nothing to install, the card works in eight languages, and you share it by link, QR code, Apple or Google Wallet pass, or a tap of an NFC card. On the Professional plan you can put it on your own domain, so the address on your vehicle is yours.

For a plumber, a barber, a trainer, a florist, a baker, an estate agent or a consultant, that is usually the whole requirement. Set-up takes minutes, and Pro, the plan with the store, bookings and wallet pass, is R189 a month in South Africa.

When a website is the right tool

If two or more of the following apply, you probably need a website as well as, or instead of, a portal.

You need to be found by search for many different things. A card is one page. If customers search for twenty different services and you want to appear for each, you need twenty pages with their own words. That is what a website's structure is for.

You sell a large or complicated range. A mini-store is a mini-store. If you have hundreds of products with sizes, stock levels, shipping rules and returns, you need an e-commerce platform, not a card.

You publish. A blog, case studies, guides, downloads. Content needs a home with navigation, and a single card page is the wrong shape for it.

You need to look like an institution. A law firm, a school, a medical practice with several doctors, a manufacturer selling to procurement departments. Buyers there expect a full site, and the absence of one costs trust.

You run complex integrations. Customer logins, account portals, quoting engines, custom forms that feed into other systems. Newbi's Professional plan sends leads to your CRM by webhook, which covers most small businesses, but a website can be wired to anything.

When both is the answer

Plenty of businesses end up with a website for the slow, searchable job, and a Newbi card for the fast, in-person, WhatsApp job. The website is where people research you. The card is what you hand them, what sits in your WhatsApp Business profile, and what you tap on their phone at the counter. It takes the booking and the order that the website would have sent to a contact form.

If you already have a site, the question is not "replace it" but "what happens when a customer meets me in person or on WhatsApp". A card answers that without rebuilding anything.

The cost question

A website has two costs: building it and keeping it alive. The second is the one people forget. Prices change, staff change, a service is dropped, a number moves, and each is an edit someone has to make, often by asking the person who built it.

A Newbi card is edited from your phone or browser, and every link, QR code, wallet pass and NFC card already shared opens the new version. For a business whose details change often, that is the practical difference.

A quick way to decide

Ask yourself what a customer does in the thirty seconds after they find you. If they read, compare and come back later, a website serves that. If they want to book, order or message now, a portal serves better, because it finishes the job on the page they are on.

Many small businesses are the second kind. If you are not sure, try the portal first. Pro is free for 14 days, and you will know quickly whether the bookings and orders arrive.
