Orders that sat unseen in Instagram DMs: mini-stores for food, baking and small shops
If your customers order by sending you a message, you are running a shop inside an inbox. A mini-store on your card takes the order properly and sends it where you will see it.

A home baker posts a photo of a cake. Twelve people comment "how much?". Four send a DM. Two of those DMs land in the message requests folder, where nobody looks. One customer orders in the comments, one on WhatsApp, one by email, and by Thursday the baker is scrolling through three apps trying to work out who wanted what for Saturday.
That is a successful business. It is just running on the wrong tool. Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp are good at showing people what you make and poor at taking the order.
Why the inbox is a bad shop
- Nobody can browse. A customer who wants to see the full range has to ask, and you answer one at a time.
- Prices are a conversation. "How much?" is asked again and again, and every reply is a minute you are not baking, cooking or packing.
- Orders have no shape. A message says "two of the chocolate and one of those small ones from last week", and you fill in the rest from memory.
- Orders get lost. Message requests, muted chats, a comment under an old post. If you do not see it, you did not get it.
- Nothing is recorded. The inbox is a conversation, not a list. There is no order book unless you keep one by hand.
What a mini-store on your card does
Newbi puts a mini-store on your digital card. One link, which you put in your Instagram bio, your WhatsApp Business profile, your Facebook page and on a QR code at the market stall. The customer opens it and sees:
- Your products with photos and prices, written by you or drafted by Naya, the AI built into Newbi, from your description.
- A way to choose what they want and send the order, instead of describing it.
- A booking button, if what you sell needs a date: a catering slot or a collection time.
- A WhatsApp button for the questions that genuinely need a conversation, and a lead form for the customer who wants to order next week and would rather leave their number now.
There is nothing to install for the customer. The card opens in any browser.
Where the order goes
Orders sent on WhatsApp through your Newbi store carry no commission. In South Africa, you can also connect a payout account so customers pay for their order by card on your Newbi card. Newbi keeps a 5% fee on those card sales, Paystack's processing fee also comes out, and the rest settles to your account. The order arrives where you already work, but as an order, with the items chosen from your list, rather than a message you have to decode. Each one also appears in your dashboard and in the Orders tab of the Newbi app on iPhone and Android, with a notification when it comes in.
Every lead lands in your dashboard too, and you can export the list whenever you need it. If you grow into a proper system, the Professional plan sends leads to your CRM by webhook.
Showing the range once
"Do you have…?" is the question that eats a small shop's day. The answer is to show the range once, where everybody can see it, instead of answering one customer at a time. Update a price or add a product from your phone, and every link, QR code and wallet pass already shared shows the new version. The price list you used to send as a photo, again and again, is now a link you send once.
At the market, at the counter, in the box
Food and small-shop businesses meet customers in person as much as online, and the card is built for that too:
- A QR code on the stall sign, the counter, the packaging and the delivery note, so a customer can reorder from the box the last order came in.
- An Apple or Google Wallet pass on your own phone, so you can show the QR code at a market in two seconds.
- An NFC card, on any plan, that a customer taps with their phone to open your store.
- A custom domain on the Professional plan, so the link on your packaging is your own name.
What it is not
A Newbi mini-store is a mini-store. Pro holds up to ten products and Professional up to a hundred. If you run hundreds of products with sizes, stock levels, courier integration and returns, you need an e-commerce platform. Newbi is for the business whose range fits on one page and whose customers would rather order through a link than register an account.
